Police have identified a dead body that was found in downtown Youngstown Wednesday evening.

55-year-old James Robert Syster is believed to be homeless. He was found in a wooded area, near the corner of Front and Hazel Street.

The man who found him tells 21 News Syster was his friend and that he was checking on him when he found him face down in a puddle shortly after 10 p.m. According to the police report, the man did not have his cell phone when he found Syster, and flagged down a woman who was walking her dog on Hazel Street and asked her to call the police.

The police report indicates that officers found cuts, abrasions, and blood on the left side of Syster's face once they arrived on scene. The report also states he had a swollen, black and blue left eye. Because of the damage to Syster's body, officers contacted detectives, who responded to the scene with the crime lab.
