A federal judge has freed a former Craig Beach police chief on $20,000 bond after his arrest on a charge of impersonating a law enforcement officer.
According to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court by the marshal's service, 39-year-old Jason Brown was cited on Sunday by Girard Police who were investigating reports of three men firing guns on private property.
According to the affidavit, when police asked Brown why he was wearing a U.S. Marshal Violent Fugitive Task Force shirt, Brown replied, "Once a Marshal, always a Marshal."
When police told Brown that he and his two companions would be cited for trespassing, Brown further stated, "I put my life on the line every day. What do you do?"
According to the U.S. Marshal, Brown was the Craig Beach police chief at one time and had been temporarily assigned to the U.S. Marshals task force on a part time basis.
However, Brown has not held a law enforcement commission since July, 2009, and his status as a special deputy was canceled when his employment with the Craig Beach Police Department ended in 2009.
Brown was booked into the Mahoning County Jail until his bond was set in federal court.
The judge confiscated Brown's passport and ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation.
