The Youngstown State University Trustees have approved a contract for Jim Tressel to become the ninth president in the history of YSU.

After the unanimous vote by trustees, Tressel and Board Chair Sudershan K. Garg signed the general terms of the contract.

Tressel addressed those present following the signing ceremony, saying he owes a lot to the community and the students.

Tressel says he and his wife Ellen know they have a lot to prove and will work hard.

The new president said that students are his number one mission, and he'll do what he can to help them reach their dreams and hopes.

He said that it is imperative that the university increase excellence.

After the meeting Tressel was held a news conference in the Ohio Room on the second floor of Kilcawley Center, followed by a public reception for the Tressels in the Chestnut Room.

Tressel was selected from an original field of 38 applicants vying for the post.

Tressel's contract begins on July 1.
