BOARDMAN, Ohio - Red always means stop.

That's the message the Ohio Department of Transportation wants to convey to drivers who may be confused by new red-arrow traffic signals going up around the Valley.

"I mean it's a red arrow, so I wouldn't know what to do," said Youngstown resident David Schnider.

"It's not about confusion, it's about continuity across all highways across the United States," said ODOT Public Information Service Director David Rose.

Rose said motorists making a left turn are used to seeing a green and yellow arrow. Now they will also see a red arrow instead of the solid red ball drivers are more familiar with. ODOT emphasizes that drivers cannot turn left when the red arrow is lit.

In Mahoning County, the intersection at 224 and Tippecanoe is one of the first to see the change. Other intersections include 224 and Market Street, 224 and South Avenue, and Western Reserve and South Avenue. In Trumbull County the new red arrow can be found at State Route 46 and 82 and 193 and 304 will also see the change.

ODOT said other states are already using the red left-turn arrow. The change in Ohio is the result of new federal guidelines. More than 600 Ohio intersections will comply by the end of this year.
