Police are not ruling out murder, but say teens death could be accidental
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed on Youngstown's north side.
Now Youngstown police are working to determine if the shooting was accidental or a crime.
Just before 9:30 p.m. Monday night, 14-year-old Suadonte Wright of Tod Lane was found shot in the head and bleeding in the street.
A witness says she witnessed the teenager walking down Kensington Avenue with two other teens, then gunfire erupted and the other boys were spotted running from the scene.
Officers found no weapon on or near the victim.
But Youngstown Police Chief Rod Foley says while murder has not been ruled out, detectives want to take a closer look. "We have had some statements that it was an accidental shooting from the victim himself, that he accidentally shot himself. But certainly we have to verify that, we have to go back and re-examine the evidence,: Foley said.
The chief also wants to find out how a gun wound up in the hands of a 14-year-old in the first place. Foley tells 21 News, "Overalll we've seen an uptick in youth violence and youth carrying firearms, so we've been trying to go out there and do more interdictions. We're going to step that up over the summer."
As police look for answers and Suadonte's family and friends grieve, the teens' classmates at the P. Ross Berry School in Youngstown are also grieving. We're told the 14-year-old was a popular student.
Joselyn Powers, an Extended Day Coordinator at P. Ross Berry School, says, "Just being the fact that he was 14-years-old is just overwhelming for us. But he was a very well liked student, so the kids decided that they wanted to do a little memorial for him."
That memorial was in the form of a memory wall where students paid their respects to their classmate with several notes saying "RIP" or "Rest in peace Don."
As grief counselors and teachers at the school help comfort the students, police detectives will continue working to find out if his death was an accident or a crime.
