Mahoning Dog Pound holds adopt-a-thon on Saturday

Youngstown, Ohio - Some are strays and others are dropped off at the pound because their owners didn't want them anymore.
There are approximately 50 dogs here at the Mahoning County Dog Pound and on Saturday, the warden is holding an emergency adopt-a-thon so that fewer dogs will have to be euthanized.
Dog Warden Matt Ditchey says, "They're beautiful dogs. They're friendly. They're happy. We have all kinds of varieties here today. All kinds of different breeds and sizes. really nice dogs."
Mahoning County's new dog warden has even changed the name of this facility to "dog pound and adoption center" so that it's more of a place where animals have a second chance instead of a place where they come to die.
In the past 13 weeks that Ditchey has been dog warden, he has had to put down nine dogs, which is down from the thousands that used to be euthanized in the past.
For any strays that are brought in, the pound puts their picture on petfinder.com and waits three days for owners to claim them. After that, they are free to be adopted.
The adopt-a-thon is Saturday, July 30th, from noon until 3:00 p.m. at The Mahoning County Dog Pound and Adoption Center on 589 Industrial Road.
The adoption fee is $42.50 per dog under three months old and $50 for dogs older than three months. That will include the dog's tag, and worm treatment.
For dogs that haven't had a rabies shot and haven't been spayed or neutered, an additional $80 is charged for those services.
