YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- Members of the Mahoning county board of elections met with county commissioners Tuesday morning to discuss the possibility of eliminating some precincts.

The meeting was held to discuss ways to keep the board within its budget after all departments faced cuts for fiscal year 2010.

Precincts have already been reduced from 416 to 278 in the last election and they may consider eliminating an additional 37 to bring the number down to 250.

Elections director Thomas McCabe said the board would save approximately $700 for each precinct eliminated.

"Unfortunately it has to be precincts, poll workers, potentially employees at the board of elections that we need to reduce to get more in line with our budget, not only for 2010 but for 2011," McCabe said.

Officials said no-fault absentee voting has decreased the need to have as many precincts as in the past.

No decision has been made yet on the cuts.
