YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- Youngstown police will show off new technology Friday that they believe will help to reduce gun violence in the city.

City officials, including police chief Jimmy Hughes and mayor Jay Williams, will hold a press conference to unveil the new tool, called Shot Spotter.

The technology, which is paid for by a $530,000 federal grant, contains sensors that can pinpoint the exact location of gunfire in a two mile radius within seconds.

Police and emergency workers are then immediately notified through their computers.

"Stopping gun violence and the crime associated with it is a top priority for our department," Hughes said in a news release.

Youngstown is the first city in Ohio to partner with ShotSpotter, Inc.

Youngstown police responded to 1,444 reports of gunfire in 2009.
