Poland Township is getting ready to introduce the community to it's newest asset--K9 Ron.

"When we're able to get a K9 that's already trained and get the equipment that we've gotten donated to us, the vet bills paid for--it's great for our community and great for the department.", said Poland Township Police Chief Greg Wilson.

Residents in Poland township will be pleased to know they got much more than they bargained for with their newest officer, who comes at no cost to the taxpayers.

"We reached out to some of our partners, K9 Protectors is one of them, and they had K9 Ron.", said Wilson, adding that the organization donated the dog.

The pit bull-mix, much like their current dog Pogo was a rescue with an underdog story.

"He was at a pound in Wisconsin and he was ready to be euthanized whenever a rescue group came in and saved him."

They soon realized that he had all of the tools to be a single-purpose narcotics dog.

"His scent detection is fantastic. We've seen the videos of him. K9 handlers, trainers love the way that he works but the greatest thing about K9 Ron is he's very affectionate.", Chief Wilson explained, making him the perfect fit for community events too.

K9 Ron's handler, Chelsea Wolfe will be making the trip to Pennsylvania to pick him up on January 6. He'll do some obedience training, and be imprinted on articles, and tracking, all before he hits the streets.

Mike Simon, a Poland resident, and partner of the Poland Township Police Department donated $5,000 that will toward outfitting the cruiser he will ride in. He's also offered to cover the vet bills. Chief Wilson and his fiánce Cheri will be footing the food bill.

"That's one of the things that I like to do is make sure that I'm a good steward of finances of Poland Township and that we're only spending money on things that are necessities." Wilson added.

This dog will also be able to cover the gaps when their current police dog, Pogo isn't on the road.
