The man shot during an altercation with Liberty Police on Monday has died.

The Mahoning County Coroner was notified of the death of Jason Cain, a 31-year-old male who was shot by officers after police attempted to block a vehicle flagged as stolen.

An autopsy was conducted at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The deadly shooting involving Liberty Police happened in a parking lot of Belmont Plaza at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Cain had allegedly stolen a vehicle before the police boxed the suspect in.

Officers responded to a notification from the Flock License Plate Reader system regarding a stolen vehicle, which was found parked and occupied in the lot of Harbor Freight.

Officers block the vehicle in with the police cars, in an effort to prevent a potential pursuit.

Officers exited their vehicles and issued commands for Cain to surrender, according to a media release sent this week.

Officers said their commands were ignored, and say that Cain began ramming the police vehicles, placing officers and bystanders in immediate danger.

One officer opened fire on the suspect, striking Cain, causing the vehicle to accelerate at high rate of speed, crashing through the front wall of the Harbor Freight building before coming to a stop.

The Liberty Fire Department transported Cain to the hospital, where he was listed at the time in critical condition.

The officer who shot Cain is on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation into the incident.

The incident remains under investigation by BCI and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office.
