A Youngstown couple's first anniversary was cut short in the Bahamas as they worked to get out, as Hurricane Dorian rolled in and water flooded the beaches and roads.
21 News talked with Terrill Vidale, the president of 2-Deep Entertainment and Youngstown's coordinator of downtown events.
Vidale tells 21 News that on Saturday it was sunny in the Bahamas, but that all changed quickly.
By Sunday, Vidale says he realized why 80% of the people at The Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas fled the island.
According to the Youngstown business owner, there was flash flooding at the resort. Vidale and his wife attempted to get a flight off of the island as soon as they could.
"I went to the front desk and used a landline to call Jet Blue. That's when I changed it to another flight, and that flight got canceled," says Vidale. "So then it went to the point of Jet Blue, fly me anywhere, but Florida. Just get me out of the Bahamas. I didn't care where I was going. They had availability. The last flight out of the Bahamas was at seven going to JFK; direct flight."
Vidale rented a vehicle and drove six hours back to Youngstown.
The couple's anniversary trip was meant to last until Tuesday, but Hurricane Dorian had different plans.
Vidale emphasized that others should not wait until the weather worsens and take swift action if potential severe weather could affect them.
