Tim Ryan says there's 'no shot' of him dropping out of presidential race
Valley Congressman Tim Ryan says there's "no shot" he's dropping out of the presidential race.
Valley Congressman Tim Ryan says there's "no shot" he's dropping out of the presidential race.
A popular online betting site is laying odds that Ryan will be the next Democratic presidential candidate to bow out after not making the third Democratic debate this past week.
However, he said there's "no shot" of that happening.
SportBettingDime.com puts Ryan as the favorite to drop out of the race following a similar announcement from Kirsten Gillibrand.
Ryan said he needs more time for people to get to know him.
"People are just getting to know me, and when they hear me, they like me," said Ryan. "I mean, I can give you the last five speeches I've given, with standing ovations, crowds of thousands of people, so we're starting to connect."
Ryan said he still has work to do on the campaign trail.
"This is just getting started. If we weren't getting endorsements every single day in the early states, I would say, 'Look, we don't have momentum our message isn't resonating,'" said Ryan. "But you know a lot of people are looking at the field now, and they're going to want somebody different, and they want somebody different."
"I think that Tim's got a voice that speaks to the average American. He might not be doing so hot right now, but I think he could easily rebound with the right marketing, the right ads, the right touring around the country," said supporter Carson Markley from Canfield. "Because Tim's just got the right voice that we need to hear."
However, for some Valley voters, they believe Ryan needs to come home and take care of business.
"He had no national following. He didn't have the financial backing or the grassroots. I think with the job losses in this area, especially with GM, he should be here in his district fighting for the people of his district, not on some campaign visiting states and living it up," said Mahoning County Republican Party Chairman Tom McCabe.
Others said the congressman has lost touch with the Valley, but Ryan said that's exactly what he's trying to do.
"From the response I'm getting here at the Canfield Fair, and in other places, people are proud that I'm doing it and they know I'm doing it for them," said Ryan. "I mean, look, I'm not on some ego trip here. I'm trying to help people in communities that are here, but also across the country."
