The operator of the Southern Park Mall is inviting members of the community and celebrate the demotion of the former Sears store to make way for new development.

Mall owner Washington Prime Group has scheduled a community day for Saturday, September 7, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the parking lot outside the former Sears store.

The celebration is being billed as a family-friendly event for Boardman and surrounding communities, featuring food trucks, Touch-a-Truck, and OSU Football on the big screen.

A brief demolition ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Washington Prime Group recently announced that it had finalized a letter of intent with a national fitness operator to open at the mall as part of plans to turn the now-vacant Sears store into exterior-access, lifestyle-oriented space.

Plans also call for retail, dining, and entertainment in addition to an outdoor athletic and entertainment green space venue adjacent to the Cinemark Theaters.

It was back in April 2018 when Sears announced it would close its store at the Southern Park Mall.

The Southern Park Dillard's store announced plans to close earlier this year.
