Prosecutors are recommending that a judge hand down a five-year-sentence to the son of a former Youngstown police chief involved in a road rage shooting on I-680 in Austintown.
Jared Hughes, 30, of Campbell is scheduled to be sentenced Friday after pleading guilty earlier to improper handling of a firearm and improper discharge of a firearm, which also includes a gun specification.
Hughes, son of former Youngstown Police Chief Jimmy Hughes, was charged in connection with a March 2018 road rage incident in which then 18-year-old Kailie Weimer was shot in her leg as the bullet pierced through her vehicle door on I-680 in Austintown.
A 17-year-old girl was also in the car at the time.
A search warrant was then later carried out at a home on Buell Avenue in Campbell in connection to the investigation.
Yacovone said Hughes had already made a deal with the family's consent before bringing the case to the grand jury.
Prosecutors say they would not object if Hughes applies for early judicial release after serving two years of his sentence.
