Threats called into the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center Wednesday morning forced the school to go on lockdown for most the day.
Canfield police say an anonymous call threatened to quote: "shoot it up". Police Chief Chuck Collucci says the anonymous phone calls made claimed there was a weapon in the school and someone had it inside. A fourth phone call received by the school was a bomb threat.
Collucci says police have a strong lead on the suspect and are confident as they continue their investigation.
Students were evacuated by classroom throughout the day. Collucci says they patted down each student, searched their bags and their cars in the parking lot.
"We appreciate the parent's patience, we were able to lockdown all of the entry points of the school and that helped out quite a bit," he said.
Canfield police, fire and the Mahoning County Sheriff's office blocked off entrances to building, telling parents to pick up students who normally get dropped off at Old North Church.
A daycare attached to that church went on lock down as a precaution.
Several MCCTC parents arrived quickly and worried about their children's safety.
"Fear, absolute fear," Corrine Sanderson said, of Youngstown. "I left my job and told my boss I couldn't clock out, I had to go."
An Austintown mom says she was receiving text messages from her daughter from inside the school starting at around 9:30 a.m.
"I was helpless, she said she was scared and I was scared and I could go do anything," Suzanne May said.
The search of student's vehicles ended at around 3:45 p.m. Those students had to wait the longest to be cleared from the building.
Police did not find a weapon.
MCCTC's superintendent says classes will resume on Thursday with an increased police presence.
"We were just glad that all of the students were safe and accounted for," John Zehentbauer, superintendent.
Zehentbauer praised the hard work of the Canfield police and local law enforcement for their efforts throughout the day.
