Ohio State Troopers at the Hiram Post are still investigating Saturday's accident that snarled traffic on the Ohio Turnpike in Mahoning County, but tell 21 News that one person has died as a result.

The accident took place around 5:00 a.m.

According to troopers, the accident involved a tractor-trailer and a Chevrolet Suburban.

Officers said that the Suburban stopped while eastbound on Interstate 76 in the right lane, while the tractor-trailer was heading east on I-76 in the right lane as well, but failed to stop.

Both vehicles then hit a concrete barrier and guardrail off the right side of the road.

According to troopers, one of the passengers of the Suburban was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Suburban was flown to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown by Stat Medevac with life-threatening injuries.

Police said that three other passengers of the Suburban were also transported to St. Elizabeth with life-threatening injuries.

Officers reported that the driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The names of the person who died and those who were injured have not yet been released.

The crash backed up eastbound traffic on the Ohio Turnpike between the Market Street and I-680 interchanges for quite some time Saturday morning.

Eastbound turnpike traffic was shut down until around 7:30 a.m. until the left-hand lane could be reopened.
