Ohio introduces compliant driver's license to meet federal guidelines

Ohio is getting an early jump on new identification requirements for national travel security, but the program is causing some confusion about choosing between two different driver's licenses.
Besides the standard driver's license, Ohio is introducing what is called a compliant license.
It has a star on the card and meets all federal requirements.
Ohio Registrar John Petit said you'll need the compliant license for boarding commercial airlines to fly or to enter federal facilities including military bases.
"Federal agencies such as TSA at the airport is going to need to see a federally compliant card in order to be able to accept it for federal identification purposes," said Petit.
To get a compliant license, it does require some additional documentation, including proof of Ohio residency.
What if you don't have a compliant card and need to fly?
"If they have a passport, that would still be an acceptable form of identification for TSA for a domestic flight," said Petit.
The compliant card cannot solely be used for international travel, including Mexico and Canada. A passport is still required.
The registrar said this isn't something you need to do immediately, Ohio is giving plenty of rollout time before the federal deadline kicks in.
The new federal identification guidelines take effect October first of 2020, so if your current driver's license expires after that date, you will need to renew early.
