An undercover sting operation using an online classified ad placed by police has resulted in the arrest of a second suspect for alleged sex crimes involving a juvenile.
Austintown Township police have charged 63-year-old Gerald Cole of Youngstown with soliciting sex, disseminating material harmful to juveniles and possessing criminal tools.
Cole was arrested Tuesday on Raccoon Road, where police say he thought he was meeting a 17-year-old boy he met through the personal ads on Backpage.com.
Police say Cole sent a text answering an ad posted by an officer in the “Men Seeking Men” dating section.
According to the police report, Cole said it was no problem when the undercover officer sent him a message saying he was only 17-years-old.
The officer says Cole offered him $50 to $100 for sex and asked him to send him a picture of his private parts.
The texts, which went on over a period of days, included obscene messages sent by Cole, according to police.
When the two agreed to meet, the undercover officer texted a message to Cole stating, “Get gummy worms. I'm sure we can have fun with those.”
Cole was immediately arrested upon meeting the officer.
Police collected evidence including condoms, lubricant, a cell phone, $192, and gummy worms.
During his interview with police, Cole told them he was lonely and wanted to try something new.
Cole was arraigned on Wednesday and freed on bond, which includes conditions that he is not allowed the use of any computer, social media, and is forbidden to have contact with juveniles.
He is scheduled for another court hearing on August 16.
The report says Cole is the second person arrested who responded to the same ad.
Last month 36-year-old Matthew Earl of Lisbon was charged with two felonies after being arrested by an officer who was posing as a 15-year-old boy.
