A Youngstown Police Department K-9 is recovering from a wound after being shot on South Hubbard Road in Coitsville.

Township police say the dog was not on duty at the time of the incident, and are still trying find out exactly what happened.

Investigators say they are sorting out conflicting stories, one of which alleges that the dog was acting in an aggressive manner and was shot in self defense.

Youngstown Police Chief Robin Lees tells 21 News that the K-9 "Goose" was with its handler, Officer Josh Kelly, when a neighbor shot the dog.

Coitsville Police do not anticipate that anyone will be charged.

They say the report is still being completed and further details were not available before the start of the Thanksgiving holiday.
