In the wake of the election of Donald Trump protests have spread throughout the nation. In lieu of protests, Kent State University took a proactive approach before their home opener against Mississippi Valley State.

"This was an effort by our men's basketball program to say we stand in unity together as a Kent State community regardless of where we are, where we come from, or what we believe. We are a Kent State family," says Kent State President Beverly Warren.

Players on the men's basketball invited fans to the join them in the National Anthem, something that took many by surprise.

"Our school is so big, it seemed like every bonded with that. i really liked that, it was new, I haven't seen anything like that before, " says one Kent State student.

"I thought it was pretty cool. I thought it was pretty thoughtful of the players to include me," says a student involved in the Anthem.

Deputy Athletic Director Casey Cegles says he hasn't seen anything like this in college sports. He adds that the idea was drawn up by all the players, and was done to show pride in their school and pride for their country.

Tonight wasn't just about a basketball game, but an opportunity to set an example. An example Kent State men's basketball team hopes spreads to the communities of all that attended.
