A former Youngstown Police Officer has been indicted by a grand jury in connection with the death of her sister.
The victim in this case 67-year-old Mary Fields was found dead in October of 2015 in a home she lived at with her sister Barb Copeland.
At the time Copeland was a Youngstown Police Officer.
Prosecutors say the official cause of death for Fields was listed as a stroke according to the coroner.
However factors that contributed to her death included malnutrition and dehydration.
Copeland faces a single count of Failure to Provide for a Functionally Impaired Person. A fourth degree felony.
The indictment says Copeland was "reckless" in her care of her sister. Allegedly failing even to provide running water.
21 News Reporter Michelle Nicks spoke with sources who say the inside of the Cordova Avenue home in which the two lived looked like that of a hoarders.
According to Youngstown Police it took the coroner more than a year to issue a ruling in the case, and it was turned over to the prosecutor's office this past January.
Copeland. who was a police officer for about 14-and-a-half years, resigned on disability in December of 2015, about two months after her sister's death.
Attorney Kim Akins who represents Copeland told 21 News: "There are issues that would not be revealed during the course of an indictment in this case. We expect to explore those issues in court. There is more than meets the eye here."
Copeland will be arraigned on October 11th.
