This coming school year, Boardman Center Middle School will become Boardman Center Intermediate School with all 5th and 6th graders moving into the one building on Market Street.
To welcome the new students coming in this fall, Boardman school administrators wanted to give the Center Intermediate school a fresh new look. So they called for volunteers to help paint every inch of the building.
Principal Randy Ebie said, "We've painted the whole cafeteria and all the hallways. Over the last three days we painted over 1,300 lockers. So, all hallways, doors, accent walls and individual classrooms have been painted."
The paint was donated and not a dime of taxpayer money will be spent.
"We have a lot of people from the community, from different churches, teachers and volunteers who signed up on the website to come in. We have three, three hour shifts each day, all week long," Ebie said.
Of the dozens of volunteers, many are teachers, like 5th grade math teacher, Jeff Puskar. "It's a great building. It has a lot of character. The first part of it is over a hundred years old. It's just a great place. It can be hot at times because it has no air conditioning. It's a great place we are one big family. We love our kids."
Boardman now has about 300 students in each grade. The board thought it would be best to keep the grades together in one building to help with testing.
They figure they will go through over 220 gallons of paint before it's all said and done and they are expected to be finished by the end of the week.
