Officials were called to the north end of Downs Road on Sunday after they say residents accidentally shot a gas well regulator behind their property. The regulators are devices lower the pressure of gas before it is routed to its destination so the pressure won't damage pipes.
Firefighters said there was an active leak when they arrived, but no one was hurt.
The fire department said there could have been an explosion and that the situation could have been fatal.
According to fire officials, this is the second incident in Champion in three years and there was one in Bristol two years ago.
