The Mahoning County Dog Pound is almost always at full capacity and is in desperate need of a new facility.

21 News reported on their struggles last week and the shelter received an outpouring of support. They're now hoping ties with a popular movie will inspire others to adopt and donate.

On Saturday, a fundraiser is being held at the Quality Pet Market in Austintown. The fundraiser will feature a book signing from Author Brad Mavis and his new book "Rita the Shawshank Dog."

The book tells the behind the scene story of Actor Jodiviah Stepp, who while filming the hit movie Shawshank Redemption discovered two homeless dogs and eventually took one home.

Mavis and Stepp plan to visit the Valley to encourage others to adopt and donate.

"It's really sweet and they're making no money off of it, they are asking for a $15 donation. They are signing the book and the $15 comes to us," said Mahoning County Dog Warden Dianne Fry.

The money collected will go towards a new dog pound facility. The current pound was built in the 70's and was designed to house only about 25 dogs for only a few days. Currently, the facility houses about 50 dogs for sometimes several months.

Daily Volunteer Jerry Serbel knows just how badly the pound is in need of a new space.

"These kennels are patched, they've been patched and repatched," explained Serbel. "The roof leaks over here very bad."

Those interested in helping can send donations to the dog pound at 589 Industrial Road in Youngstown, Ohio.

Those interested in the book signing can stop by the Quality Pet Market at 5543 Mahoning Ave. on Saturday the 12th from 9 a.m. - noon.
