After apologies and explanations, the city of Farrell is officially parting ways with the newly hired police chief after an email containing a racial slur went public.

"Plain and simple it wasn't for me. I was disgusted by the comment and it's my opinion that you have to move on," said City Manager Michael Ceci.

Burke sent the email back in April to raise money for Sharon elementary students, saying "them sharon n!&$#@ gotta learn how to read."

The Farrell City manager Michael Ceci says officials took a few days to digest the content of the email but say Burke's words do not mirror the values of the community, and they had to cut ties.

"That will always be out there. There will always be that level of doubt in their leader.. The people need to believe in the people working for them in the private sector and they have to understand that this job is a privilege. You have to earn that," said Ceci.

Ceci says he met with Burke this morning to deliver the news. He says because Burke has not started working with the city yet, he was not fired, he did not resign, but understood the City's decision to look for another candidate.

And while Burke lost the title of chief in Farrell, in Sharon, he still serves as a city council member.

In fact, Burke was on council at the same time he sent out the email using the n-word to describe Sharon  elementary students in April.

The Vice President of Council Frank Connelly says he is "surprised by the email."

He says Burke has been on the council for nearly four years but his term ends shortly in December.

He told 21 News council members were just recently made aware of the email, and it's safe to say Council will be discussing the email at their next meeting.
