Government reveals possible witnesses in Oakhill corruption case

The list of potential witnesses who may be called to testify in the Oakhill corruption trial reads like a Who's Who in the world of Mahoning Valley politics, business and the legal profession.
The prosecution has filed an amended list of persons who may be called to take the stand in the trial of Youngstown Mayor John McNally, former Mahoning County Auditor Michael Sciortino, and attorney Martin Yavorcik.
The three face criminal charges for allegedly conspiring to cover up a plot to keep Mahoning County from moving some county operations from a building leased by the Cafaro Company and into Oakhill Renaissance Place.
Members of the Cafaro family are among the 91 people named as potential witnesses, including retired shopping mall mogul Anthony Cafaro, who is believed to be the businessman behind the effort to keep county offices from moving.
Also in the list is Cafaro's brother John (J.J) Cafaro, and Anthony's wife Flora, who was named in an original Oakhill indictment which was later dismissed.
Many of the witnesses are people associated with the legal profession in Youngstown and other parts of Northeast Ohio, including members of the Cleveland law firm, Ulmer and Berne.
Government investigators claim that a copy of the county's confidential offer to buy what became the Oakhill Renaissance Place was faxed from then County commissioner John McNally's law office to Ulmer and Berne, which represented the Cafaro Company in an earlier breach of contract lawsuit filed when the county moved the Jobs and Family Services department out of a Cafaro owned property.
The trial is not scheduled to begin until next spring.
