Eastern Gateway to offer program in growing field

Eastern Gateway Community College will offer a new program in the expanding field of advanced machining beginning in the Fall.
EGCC says that around 300 positions are projected to be available for machinists in Columbiana, Mahoning, Trumbull, Lawrence, and Mercer counties.
Students enrolling in the program will prepare for jobs in the field by learning about computer-aided machining and machine programming. Additionally, students will earn industry-recognized credentials from the National Institute for Machining Skills.
The two year program, which may lead to an associates degree, will be aided through EGCC's partnership with the Oh-Penn Manufacturing.
The program's development was also made possible thanks to the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant.
Classes are scheduled to begin on August 24th and open-enrollment will run through August.
According to the Bureau of Labor Services, machinists set up and operate computer-controlled and mechanically-controlled machine tools to produce precision metal parts, instruments, and tools.
Entry-level machinists can expect to earn approximately $14 per hour. EGCC says wages can grow to around $19 with experience.
EGCC estimates tuition to be around $3,450 per year. They offer financial aid and encourage students to register as soon as possible to ensure the best package.
