Mill Creek MetroPark officials are trying to find out what caused the death of several fish found in Lake Newport.

Police reported finding the fish floating near the boat dock on West Newport Drive at around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Samantha Villella, MetroParks Community Engagement Director tells 21 News that the investigation had just gotten underway and that the park Planning and Natural Resources Director, Steve Avery was trying to determine the number of dead fish in the lake.

Birds could be seen feeding on some of the fish Monday afternoon.

Villella says that they have contacted the United States Department of Agriculture, the Ohio EPA and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and are waiting to hear from representatives from those agencies.

According to the MetroParks website, Lake Newport is the largest of Mill Creek Park's three lakes, offering 60 acres of open water and 40 acres of wetlands.

Boating and fishing are permitted in the lake. Kayaks and pedal boats are rented at the boathouse.
