Police Chief Gerry Smith spent Monday afternoon walking through the neighborhood in which he grew up.

Accompanied by Lt. Mark Johnson, they stopped at a store and knocked on doors introducing themselves to the community.

The chief has made getting to know residents a priority since he took office in September.

“Talk to them about any concerns they might have in the neighborhood as far as safety, what they would like to see as far as the services of Sharon PD,” said Chief Smith.

The Executive Director of the Mercer County Housing Authority and others staff members joined them on the tour of the area known to police as Zone Five, which encompasses an area from Prindle Street south to the city line and from Dock Ave east to Stambaugh Avenue.

Elizabeth Murray said that she was shocked to see the officers, and told 21 News that it was a great experience for her children.

“Seeing them come to the door for a positive reason will have them know not to be scared and they can go to them. So I think it was really nice and it shows they actually care about their community,” said Murray.

Resident Martina Moore says it was nice to be able to discuss safety improvements. As a parent she expressed concerns for her children's safety when it comes to speeding drivers.

Chief Smith said that it's important for folks put a face to the officers and not just see a police cruiser.

He says he believes that the steps taken Monday will help build relationships and a sense of community.
