A massive fire tore through the Growmark Fertilizer Plant on Sunday night.

Crews were called out to the blaze at the corner of Elmwood Street and Virginia Avenue just before 10 p.m. Sunday. Residents who live near the plant said their power went out around 9 p.m. Smoke and flames could be seen shooting from the business from miles away.

East Liverpool Fire Chief William Jones estimates the damage to be more then a million dollars.

The fire damaged the warehouse and the bagging processing center, three vehicles inside, a front end loader and other equipment used to mix and bag fertilizer.

Fire fighters asked for help from the Ohio environmental protection agency due to the fertilizer run off near the Ohio River.

"It's just basically fertilizer that they use in your garden urea potash nitrogen,” said East Liverpool Fire Chief William Smith.

Initial reports indicate that no significant amount of runoff reached the river.

No one was injured in the blaze, and the cause is now under investigation.
