A Newton Falls man is in custody after allegedly shooting a Warren man during a fight and then leading police on a chase.
Warren Police were called to Clermont Avenue at 6:41 p.m. Thursday.
Forty-eight-year-old Larry Newland was found on the ground in a neighbor's driveway after being shot in the stomach.
Police say that Newland's roommate who is also the suspect, 37-year-old Jeffrey Stone, left the scene on a motorcycle.
“There were two separate pursuits by Braceville and Newton Falls.” said Warren Police Lt.. Marty Gargas. “The suspect crashed the motorcycle, there was another foot pursuit and the weapon that was used in the assault was recovered.”
Investigators say Stone threw the gun into the Mahoning River and struggled with police.
Police say Newland's injuries are not life threatening.
Stone faces charges of felonious assault, fleeing and eluding police, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon, and tampering with evidence.
Several Clermont Avenue residents were shocked to learn about this shooting in what they describe as a typically quiet neighborhood. Police said that they were also surprised to respond to a shooting in this neighborhood.
