A Girard police officer whose job was on the line for allegedly violating terms of a "last chance agreement", has submitted a letter of resignation.

Mayor Jim Melfi tells 21 News that the letter from officer Larry Neely only said that he was quitting for personal reasons, and that the resignation was effective immediately.

Neely made a “last chance” agreement with city officials in March after an internal affairs investigation showed he was aware of underage drinking parties taking place at his Mosier road home.

To keep his job, Neely signed the agreement which required a 20 day suspension, and specified that Neely would be terminated from his position if he is charged with any future infractions

Melfi told 21 News earlier Tuesday that Neely violated terms of that agreement that could result in the officer's resignation or termination.

Melfi would not say how Neely allegedly violated the agreement.
