Man sentenced for shooting death of Sharon athlete
MERCER, Pa. - A judge has sentenced 20-year-old Jontae Barnes to just under two years in jail for the shooting death of a Sharon High School athlete.
Barnes pleaded guilty earlier to involuntary manslaughter and possessing a firearm without a license in connection with the January shooting death of 17-year-old Leangelo Ford at a party in Sharon.
Barnes, who claimed the gun fired when Ford pulled the weapon from his hand, apologized to Ford's family during his sentencing hearing.
Ford's father says he is disappointed that Barnes did not receive a longer sentence in order to teach others a lesson. But he said he hopes Barnes can turn his life around.
The judge also ordered Barnes to make restitution for Ford's funeral expenses, and gave him credit for time already served on his sentence. Barnes has been in jail since the shooting.
Barnes will be on probation for ten years after completing his sentence
