Trumbull doctors seek lawsuit relief
WARREN, Ohio - Doctors in Trumbull County say huge jury verdicts and too many frivolous medical malpractice cases are driving up the cost of doing business.
They warn if the trend continues, many doctors will chose not to stay in the area and others will not practice here.
Attorneys say doctors can avoid malpractice law suits by being more careful and knowing their limitations.
"The frequency of which these suits get filed and the damages are the main thing that drives up the costs. That makes physicians concerned about practicing any kind of medicine and particularly something as high exposure as obstetrics," said Dr. Morris Pulliam, Neurosurgeon at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
"There are other practitioners that my office literally gets phone calls on every single month with the same type of pattern over and over again. Where they are taking on a challenge they shouldn't take and they're getting a bad result and people should be compensated when they've been injured," said Martin White, Medical Malpractice Attorney.
Physicians want the public to support more legal reforms in Ohio, but attorneys believe there are enough protections for doctors already.
