Feds target notorious Youngstown street gang
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Murder, robbery, drugs and witness tampering. Federal investigators say those are just some of the crimes committed by a notorious Youngstown gang that calls itself L.S.P.
On Thursday, the Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol and Firearms and the Youngstown Police took a major step towards dismantling what authorities say was not only a dangerous street gang, but a criminal enterprise.
Using graffiti to mark their turf or territory, the ATF and Youngstown Police Department say the violent South side street gang is no stranger to crime and violence. In fact, the suspected leader of the Youngstown gang, Daquann Hackett, was one of three people shot in November of 2008 on Sherwood Avenue, part of the area the group has battled so violently to protect for years.
L.S.P. stands for Laclede Avenue, Sherwood Avenue, Parkview and or Princeton and a 42 count federal indictment charging 23 members and associates of the L.S.P. street gang alleges they were involved in murder, robbery, witness intimidation, retaliation and drug trafficking.
"There was some activity that was not underground, it was blatant and things observed by investigators," said Kim Riddell, Special Agent with ATF.
Not only did the gang allegedly sell heroin and crack-cocaine, but they operated in a multi-block area of the South side arming themselves with guns that police suspect they sold illegally, weapons often used in other crimes.
"To be able to give the neighborhood back to the community and remove this violent element, it's one step of many. ATF is partnering with Youngstown police to make sure that we bring the community back," Riddell said.
While nine members of the gang were arrested Thursday, five are still wanted by police. They include Andre Ballinger, II, Carlton Council, Aldric Jones, Michael Jones and Terrence Machen.
