MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio- Former Valley congressman James Traficant did not file to run for office on Thursday.

Thursday was the deadline for major party candidates to file paperwork for their candidacies.

Traficant spokesman Dennis Malloy said the former congressman had petitions ready to file for the sixth and 17th districts, but he did not file either of them.

Traficant could still run as an independent in the general election.

The deadline to file as an independent is May 3.

Traficant served in Congress as a Democrat, but made an unsuccessful bid for Congress as an independent while serving a seven year prison sentence for corruption.
