YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The new year is shaping up to be a violent one in the city of Youngstown after a shooting rampage on Sunday.

Screams were heard outside an apartment complex where mayhem broke out after a man with a semiautomatic gun went on a rampage outside the Eastwood Village Apartments off McGuffey and Eastway Drive.

Captain Rod Foley from the Youngstown Police Department said, "Several people started calling our 911 center saying a male suspect was inside 1093 firing a gun, screaming and hollering, threatening people inside. He was apparently looking for a female inside that wasn't there at the time. Eventually he came back outside and started firing more rounds towards her apartment. He broke out a window below her apartment. He was aiming his gun wildly, according to witnesses, all over the place in front. A male subject, who happened to be walking past, was also threatened by him with a gun," Foley said.

Members of a church congregation were leaving church at about 1:30 p.m. when they heard the sound of gunfire. Many of them were young kids who were terrified and ran back inside.

Pastor John Blackwell, from Courts of Praise Cathedral, witnessed what took place calling it an act of war on city streets.  He said, "A big guy was running.  This other guy was running behind him shooting.  The other guy that was running away ran up to the police and said 'Hey I'm on your side.'  The cop told him to get on the ground and covered him. Meanwhile, the other guy is shooting at the police officer. The police officer said put your gun down, put your gun down. He didn't put his gun down. He kept shooting.  The officer must have fired about eight times.  Then he (the shooter) jumped in his truck and tried to run the police over and by that time there were about 12 cop cars out here and they all shot at him."
